Washington, DC, can be a pretty fantastic place to spend a day with your child. It can also be fairly overwhelming. The fact is that DC tends to get a lot of visitors, and no one wants to spend a day battling crowds for a subpar experience. That’s exactly why I’m here! I am a Virginia family photographer (as well as a mom myself!), and I adore working with families to help them create memories, whether they’re locals or traveling from across the country. Here are some kid-friendly things to do in DC that I’m confident the whole family will love!

United States Botanic Garden

100 Maryland Avenue SW, Washington, DC 20001

The United States Botanic Garden seeks to educate everyone on the plants and the foods that sustain the earth. While everyone will find something they love at this site, the Children’s Garden tends to be a favorite amongst younger visitors. Your child will have a kid-friendly and hands-on way to learn about the plants in DC. They can water some flowers, dig in the dirt, and discover how plants grow.

National Children’s Museum

1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20004

For over 50 years, the National Children’s Museum has been fueling children’s curiosity with its hands-on exhibits. The museum understands that kids learn best through play. That’s why it lets children engage with topics like STEAM with games, displays, and experiments. It also has a specialty area for toddlers and infants, so they don’t have to feel left out!

National Zoo

3001 Connecticut Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20008

After you take your animal lover to the Museum of Natural History, it’s time to head on over to the zoo! The kid-friendly DC museum has daily animal demos that let you see the creatures in their full glory! You’ll be able to visit animals from across the globe. They have lizards, bald eagles, alpacas, monkeys, seals, and ostriches. Plus, the zoo recently announced they’d be adding pandas back to their list at the end of 2024!
