It’s no secret that being an expectant parent and parenthood are challenging experiences, especially considering that every child is unique. The difficulties and developmental hurdles each child may face can be radically different. As a parent, I often felt overwhelmed and woefully out of my depth as a mom, wishing I had someone to step in and help support me and my family. If you know that feeling all too well, and that’s you, Happy Parents, Happy Babies might just be the thing to help.
Happy Parents, Happy Babies is a psychotherapy, consulting, coaching, and group support business founded and run by Emily Griffin, a Washington DC native and Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) with 21 years of experience serving DC area families. In addition to this, she is also a mom of five. She designed her services for parents, parents-to-be, and perinatal professionals.
Couples counseling, postpartum planning, and a postpartum communication class are all available to expecting parents, as well as consultations for second-, third-, or fourth-time parents to support older children as they adjust to a new baby in the family. For parents with children of all ages, Emily offers hands-on parenting support to support parents in building their understanding of their child’s individual and unique needs. This can also include her direct observation.
As many parents may not necessarily struggle with their child’s issues but with their own, Emily also offers proactive individual support and treatment for parents experiencing depression, anxiety, complex trauma, attachment concerns, and other stressors or complications that impact their ability to enjoy parenthood.
Coping skills, like mindfulness and guided meditation, are also taught as parents transition into a new phase of life—mastering a “work-life balance,” adjusting to a new identity as a parent and making time for friends, family, and hobbies amid a huge life change.
Emily’s psychotherapy practice provides new parent counseling to benefit the entire family. She offers her services through in-home visits, depending on where you live, and office sessions at her office in northwest DC. Virtual appointments are also available, as her practice went online during the pandemic.
Sometimes, as new parents, we just need support beyond what our families and friends can provide, and that’s okay! I know I’ve been there, and that’s what practices like Emily’s are for. She aims to provide responsive, sensitive support to parents as they build their parenting perspective.
As a parent, it’s hard to accept that it’s more than okay to ask for help from a compassionate business like Happy Parents, Happy Babies.
