Things To Do In Northern VA with Kids

Great Country Farms – Bluemont, VA

This is a family-owned “you-pick” farm that’s not just a seasonal produce picking farm; it’s a destination for family fun as well. Depending on the season, there’s various berries, like strawberries, blackberries, and cherries, peaches, potatoes, apples, pumpkins. You’ll want to plan on spending a few hours there to enjoy their 12 acre play area. We’ve been there a few times ourselves and there seriously is no end to the activities your children can do there. With your Farm Play Area admission, you get to do wagon rides, rope swings, huge tube slides, putt-putt courses, and more. There’s even a gigantic pumpkin-colored jumping pillow.

A fun morning or afternoon starts at $10 for children and $12 for adults, when you purchase “Online Advance Tickets”. If you opt to pay at the gate, it starts at $12 for children and $14 for adults. These prices change during their festival times (spring, summer, and fall) so be sure to check their website for the most up-to-date fees.

Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park – Aldie, VA

This is a fairly new 257-acre regional park that opened just last fall 2022. There are two playgrounds AND a splash pad here. We normally frequent the big playground and I’m really looking forward to the incredible splash pad zone they have for some summer time fun! It is an amazing place for ALL age groups, not just children. There are large sports fields, a frisbee golf field, plenty of pavilions, ponds, hiking trails, and even a skate park. I’m blown away by how much this park will have to offer our family for the many years to come. There are also pavilion and facility rental options as well for birthday parties and other special occasions.

Chessie’s Big Backyard – Franconia, VA

Let’s make a spash into Chessie’s Big Backyard. We really enjoyed making the car ride to Franconia from Reston to visit last year! This well-thought-out playground caters to children of all ages/abilities and boasts a fully accessible Chesapeake-Bay themed sprayground too. The main area of the playground is nature-themed and for children ages 5 to 12. The pirate-themed play area further back should entice the toddling littles. In addition, there is a really lovely 2,160-foot trail that is accessible to children and adults of all abilities with features that appeal to all senses.

The best part? Both the playground and sprayground are FREE, as long as you’re not part of a commercial or non-profit group. The catch is there’s a limit to how many can be in the sprayground at a time so get there early to queue up! There are sheltered spaces available for reservation as well.

For safety reasons, do not wear street shoes in the sprayground. Children (15 years and younger) must wear aquatic shoes or sandals with a back strap at all times. Adults may wear flip-flops instead of aquatic shoes or sandals with a back strap. Non-standing, non-mobile, babies are exempt.

Clemyjontri Park – McLean, VA

If you’re still looking for some things to do in Northern VA with kids, this wonderful place is an inclusive playground where all children are welcome. The park is filled with wheel-chair accessible ramps, wider openings for easier access, sensory rich equipment, special safety features for swings, a carousel, and pavilions. There’s also a new trackless train that includes a ramp for easy access! The pavilions there are available for half-day and full-day rentals. There’s 3 pavilions to choose from and you can view more details here

I am always a fan of playground with rubber grounds and this park is perfect in that sense! There’s something for everyone to do here, in interactive ways too. Bring your sunblock and hats because depending on the time of day, there’s no shade in some parts of this park.
