529 Kids Consign founder and owner Megan has plenty of experience in fashion retail. In her early days, she worked as an Abercrombie and Fitch associate before being promoted to manager. She was an assistant buyer for Arlington-based store Hecht’s and then served as East-Coast regional manager for Calvin Klein Jeans. When it comes to clothing and how it’s best sold, she could be considered an expert.
After her first son was born during a period of economic struggle, Megan’s position at Calvin Klein Jeans was eliminated. It was convenient timing, as she was learning firsthand just how quickly babies and kids grow out of their clothing. She knew she couldn’t be the only mom with piles of gently used clothing gathering around the house, so she decided to combine her love of retail, dressing her son, and helping other new moms save a little money. Thus, 529 Kids Consign was born!
Their brick-and-mortar store in historic Old Town, Alexandria, opened shortly thereafter. It’s a beautiful, well-organized, boutique-inspired store with a large variety of clothing for kids of all ages. You’ll have to stop by and see for yourself in person!
Products And Services
529 Kids Consign begins with fashion-minded grown-ups like you! Schedule an appointment to bring in your kids’ gently used clothing of up to 50 items at a time. Then, see if they make a good fit for their selection. If you don’t live nearby, you can also ship your items to them directly; just plan that whatever they choose not to sell will be donated to a local charity. They are also offering Drop-In Days on Wednesdays, where you can just stop by with 30 items or less!
529 Kids Consign accepts (and therefore sells) baby and children’s clothing up to size 10, shoes from newborn to kids size 3, and sizes XS – L in maternity clothing. They offer a 60%/40% split, where you’ll still receive up to 60% of the selling price of your items once they sell!
Specialty
As a consignment shop, it can be a challenge to keep up with posting their in-store inventory online. Therefore, if you’re looking for something specific, it’s always best to call and see what they may have available. They do post new items daily on social media, however, so if you see something you have to have, ask them to hold the item by leaving your email address in a comment and stop in to pick it up! They’ll email you the invoice, and you’ll have until midnight that night to pay it. Otherwise, it will go to the next shopper! If you don’t live nearby, they can also ship items to you for a small additional shipping fee.
